Activity 1
Title
To assist the WHO in integrating the oral health component in the WHO Healthy Ageing document
Description:
The WHOCC conducted the following activities:
1.
an epidemiological cohort study targeting at the ageing population in Japan to assess how oral health is integrated and essential to general health to support the WHO oral health strategy
2.
a research consortium (Asian Geriatric Oral Health Study) to develop the standard protocol for conducting the regional oral health study to provide quality information to the WHO oral health database.
3.
assistance for the development of oral health component in the initiative of "Healthy Ageing".
4.
assistance for the oral care pathway to develop the comprehensive assessment and care pathway for Integrated Care for Old People (ICOPE)
Concrete expected outcome:
1.
Development of a regional standard tool conducting epidemiological geriatric oral health study
2.
Development of chapter for oral health promotion for ageing society of WPRO Regional Action Plan for Healthy Ageing.
3.
Development of ICOPE guidance on comprehensive assessment and care pathways
Outcomes:
1.
The WHOCC has developed oral health components of the WPRO Regional Action Plan for Healthy Ageing.

The WHOCC has contributed in upgrading oral health contexts into the ICOPE, as an expert member of the WHO clinical consortium for healthy ageing.
4.
The WHOCC has advocated the importance of oral health for ageing population in the Asian countries based on the scientific outcomes and evidence through Niigata Elderly Cohort Study.

Activity 2
Title
To assist WHO in dissemination of oral health through primary prevention
Description:
The WHOCC has supported the following activities (mainly in Asian countries):
1.
coordinating scientific seminars to increase the awareness for controlling of intake of free sugars based on the WHO guidelines on sugar intake for both adults and children
2.
conducting technical workshops to train skills and knowledge of oral health professionals for implementing tobacco cessation into their practice based on the WHO monograph on tobacco cessation and oral health
3.
conducting technical seminars to train skills and knowledge of a school-based fluoride mouth rinsing programme among younger age groups to develop a national oral health programme for dental caries prevention.
4.
collaboration with other WHOCCs in Asian countries in promoting of primary interventions
Concrete expected outcome:
1.
To develop educational training tools for tobacco cessation in the oral health strategy
2.
To disseminate efficacy of a school-based fluoride mouth rinsing programme
Outcomes:
1.
The WHOCC has worked to develop oral health service model in the framework of school health in Myanmar, collaborated with the Ministry of Health and Sports, Myanmar, and the WHO country office in Myanmar.
2.
The WHOCC has collaborated with the WHOCC for Oral Health Education and Research, Mahidol University, Thailand, to conduct a trial for the development of a dietary intervention for the partial dentate elderly in Japan and Thailand.
3.
The WHOCC has assisted University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, to implement a school-based fluoride mouth rinsing programme in Kandy district.
4.
The WHOCC has produced a translation of "WHO monography on tobacco cessation and oral health integration" into Japanese language. (ISBN:978489605372)
5.
The WHOCC has provided technical and financial assistance to publish "Ending childhood dental caries: WHO implementation manual".

Activity 3
Title
To assist WHO in supporting the implementation in the Member States of the phase-down uses of dental amalgam in the framework of the Minamata Convention on Mercury
Description:
WHO Oral Health Programme has built capacity and provide technical assistance to low-income countries for an accelerated implementation of the phase down of dental amalgam use in line with Minamata Convention on mercury. The WHO CC planned for coordinating scientific workshops collaborated with other WHOCC and undertaking collaborating research with WHO CC National Institute for Minamata Disease to develop systems for waste management on amalgam use as well as for infection control to minimize amalgam exposure in dental settings, however, due to COVID-19, activities were postponed.
Concrete expected outcome:
1.
Demonstrate insurance programmes that favor use of alternatives to dental amalgam for restoration
2.
Produce and disseminate educational tool for waste management of dental amalgam in multiple low resource countries
Outcomes:
1.
The CC has participated in the Ad Hoc Group of Experts on Review of Annexes A and B Group-call on Dental Amalgam, November 11, 2020.
The CC has discussing with WHO-CC in Minamata regarding the strategies for encouraging phasing down of dental amalgam, in the area for clinical management, environmental management as well as public actions needed to reduce or control the impacts of the amalgam waste contamination. However, due to COVID-19, our next meeting has been postponed until the status is becoming stable.

Title
To assist the WHO in strengthening the oral health systems
Description:
The WHO CC is assisting for global report on oral health and oral health information system based on the WHO Oral Health Programme.
Concrete expected outcome:
1.
To report updated oral health information
2.
To work for a specific chapter for oral health information of a upcoming global report on oral health
Outcome:
1.
In order to maintain the WHO Global Oral Health Database, the WHOCC has presented information about the prevalence of periodontal disease in countries, through scientific review papers.
The information has been updated in its the Country Area Profile Project (CAPP).
2.
The WHOCC has under the preparation to produce a systematic review of severe periodontal disease status among ageing population.
