Title;
To support WHO in dissemination of the evidence on interrelationships oral health-general health-quality of life to strengthen oral health components into public health programmes.

Description;
Scientific evidences about the relationships between oral and general health through Niigata elderly cohort study have extensively supported to strengthen WHO oral health promotion based on NCD prevention. NCD prevention strategies are designed with emphasis on common risk factors intervention. Opportunities and barriers for promotion of oral health are identified on the basis of experiences from the successful national campaign "Healthy Japan 21" and the enactment of "the Oral Health Promotion Law" in Japan. Through these experiences, support WHO to develop the strategy for driving oral health programmes.
Concrete expected outcome;
Assistance to public health administrators in formulation of policies and planning of oral health programmes, particularly in WPRO countries, supported by "Healthy Japan 21" and "the Oral Health Promotion Law" in Japan.

Activity 3
Title;
To assist WHO in application of the evidence on school oral health promotion through primary prevention.
Responsible person;
Hideo Miyazaki, Akihiro Yoshihara, Kumiko Minagawa and Misuzu Sato
Description;
Surveillance of oral health of children participating in different school health programmes in Japan is carried out in order to explore the efficiency of oral disease prevention and health promotion. Special focus will be on identification of high-risk groups of children and the experiences from different intervention schemes. In addition, the relationship between oral health and nutrition are important and "Shokuiku" -Food and Nutrition Education in Japan- is also key action for school health promotion in Japan. Dissemination of classroom based fluoride administration and systematization of oral health-nutrition science are important to continuous development of the WHO school health initiative.
Concrete expected outcome;
Assessment of the effectiveness of school oral health promotion activities have great relevance to WHO work for strengthening national capacity in oral health of children worldwide. Continuous assistance is offered in translation of such experiences to WPRO countries and at global level.

Title;
To expand linkages with dental public health institutions in WPRO countries and to provide post-graduate training courses in oral health promotion and disease prevention.

Description;
Undergraduate student exchange, postgraduate training, sending interns to WHO HQ and acceptance of oral health professionals from various countries are provided on global oral health promotion and public health science in order to develop capacity of researchers in organization of community based oral health intervention and adjustment of oral health systems in accordance with policies of the WHO Global Oral Health Programme. Training is particular offered to candidates of developing nations in WPRO countries.
Concrete expected outcome;
Successfully trained health researchers/ PhD in global oral health science with relevant skills in community medicine and survey methodology. The Course in Human Resource Development for Global Oral Health Science is designed that, after completing the basic studies in the Course for Oral Life Science at the Niigata University Graduate School of Medical and Dental Sciences, graduate students will participate in global networks through externships.

Description;
Dental education should ensure oral health professionals are equipped with the necessary skills to meet the social needs. Investigate dental education systems that should all result in the graduate being competent to perform nationally or internationally agreed basic clinical competence.
Concrete expected outcome;
The electronic database on which the directory is based provides additional information relevant on dental curricula, educational approaches, the assessment of students, the availability and use of facilities and equipment, staff activities, continuing education the mutual recognition of qualifications, and the evaluation or accreditation of dental school programmes. The database will provide information on the status and trends of dental education worldwide and support development of policies of the WHO Global Oral Health.
